“Intercity passenger rail can play a really important role in connecting rural America to urban America. There is no doubt about it. We see it across the network. And there is a permanent place for the long-distance network. I just don’t think the long-distance network serves a lot of these communities very well. And that we could do a lot better job serving these communities.”

Those words came from Amtrak President & CEO Richard Anderson on Wednesday, June 26th, during testimony before the U.S. Senate on what comes next for Amtrak and the U.S. passenger rail network. The hearing held by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, came at a time of renewed scrutiny of Amtrak’s National Network, with Congressional leaders defending the importance of maintain service on all exiting routes.

Tens of millions of American don’t live on the coasts but in communities in the middle of the country…”flyover country”. Passenger trains make money by generating jobs, retail, mobility, tourism and real-estate development. Communities form, grow, thrive and reinvest because of the “profit” as a result of rail service.

Everyday I’m proud of the work of the Rail Passengers Association’s professional staff. I watch them work tirelessly to remind Washington DC and Amtrak that there is a “rest of the country”.

Today I ask you to help the Rail Passengers Association by donating. Your generosity helps to ensure that passengers voices from ALL areas of the country are heard, loud and clear.
